DESCRIPTION

Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education

The UCSF School of Medicine, the sponsoring organization of one of the nation’s largest Graduate Medical Education programs, seeks a new Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education/DIO (ADGME).

The ADGME provides leadership in the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the institution’s graduate medical education programs. The ADGME works with a professional staff to support the program directors of UCSF’s 96 ACGME accredited training programs and 108 Non-ACGME accredited fellowships. The ADGME provides strategic guidance to the Dean’s Office and consultation to the DIOs of independent GME programs at the Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland and UCSF Fresno. Success in this work requires expertise in educational and administrative leadership, with a deep understanding of GME accreditation, financing and program management as well as effective skills in communication and change leadership. The ideal candidate will have a keen understanding not only of educational theory and practice but also evolving trends in healthcare delivery and trainee wellness.

The ADGME reports to the Vice Dean for Education in the School of Medicine and serves as an essential member of the Vice Dean’s undergraduate and graduate medical education leadership team. The ADGME functions as a collaborative colleague with departmental leadership and program directors and the clinical leadership of UCSF Health and its affiliates. The ADGME supports and oversees core graduate medical education faculty; educational staff professionals who the central administration of the training programs; the governance structure of the graduate medical education curriculum; and the ACGME accreditation process. The ADGME participates in the financial management of the graduate medical education mission and works to align resident and fellow education strategies, policies and procedures with those of other UCSF educational programs by collaborating with other campus leaders including the Medical Education Associate Deans, clinical department leadership, and leadership of UCSF Health and affiliated clinical sites.
The ADGME is expected to use evidence-based strategies in this work and to contribute to the national conversation on curricular design and evaluation, faculty development, and institutional support for education.

This is a 0.80 FTE position, funded through the Office of Medical Education. The additional .20 FTE professional effort will be compensated by individual’s home department for contributions to that department.

Personal Qualifications
We seek a physician educator and leader with the capacity to inspire, support, and encourage trainees, staff and faculty. The ADGME must demonstrate expertise in graduate medical education administration (either at the program director or designated institutional official level), program assessment, and continuous quality improvement. The ADGME must enthusiastically and expertly advance our culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion, using curriculum to reinforce our aspirational goals of equity in all aspects of education, science and health care. The work of the ADGME is done with and through others and thus, the successful candidate must be able to engage and empower School of Medicine faculty and staff as well as UCSF campus staff and leaders to advance our collective work and to ensure a positive environment for all. The ADGME must be able to demonstrate a commitment to helping our trainees achieve the excellence expected of a UCSF physician. Essential skills include superb communication, creative problem solving, change leadership, effective team-based collaboration, flexibility and adaptability, and the ability to design and work within systems.

Position Requirements
The successful candidate must have:

  1. An MD degree and a faculty rank of associate or full professor
  2. Experience in graduate medical education with documented effectiveness as a program director or Designated Institutional official;
  3. Demonstrated effectiveness to advancing a culture and climate of diversity and inclusion;
  4. Demonstrated effectiveness as a leader of faculty and staff

The official start date for this 0.80 FTE position is January 1, 2021.
